A walk, authored by chance. Press Go and Aimless draws a chain of waypoints you can't see on a map - only an arrow and a distance. At each waypoint the voice you chose puts a thought in your head. You take a photo if you want one. When you come back you hold a small artifact: the shape you walked, the photos, the words. A machine for serendipity, really. You supply the wandering, it supplies the accident.
Choose your settings, face the direction you'd like to drift, and press Go: the first waypoint lands roughly ahead of you.
Follow the arrow. Within about 30 metres of a waypoint the card is revealed and you're asked for a photo. The circle is generous on purpose: phone GPS drifts, so an exact spot could never be reached. If a waypoint is unreachable, tap "Close as I can get" and the walk accepts where you stood.
You get a self-contained HTML artifact of your walk that you can download or share: the shape you walked, your photos, and the words your coordinates generated. The My Voice option has no cards of its own; you can attach your own text at export. Open a walk from the Archive to style it: pick a skin, filter the photos. Long-press a photo to select it, again to deselect.
A walk can leave your phone three ways: the Card, a square image of the route over your featured photo; the HTML file, one self-contained document with no scripts, so it opens cleanly on iOS and inside WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram, Discord or email; and a live page on your Neocities site, usually the best option for Facebook and anywhere that renders a link preview.
Everything runs on your device and works offline once loaded. Nothing is uploaded. A walk leaves the phone only as a file you choose to export, so export the ones you want to keep. Installing to the home screen gives the storage the best protection and gives a full-screen experience.
Android: Chrome. It installs Aimless as a real app: its own icon, its own window, protected storage. Most other Android browsers only pin a shortcut, and some restrict the sensors Aimless needs.
iPhone: Safari. iOS only lets Safari install to the home screen.
Chrome on Android: tap the ⋮ menu, then "Add to Home screen" or "Install app". Safari on iPhone: tap Share, then "Add to Home Screen". After that, always open Aimless from its icon.
Location (and motion, on iPhone): both are essential, both are asked for on first open. If you denied one:
Only if you export them. Walks live in browser storage, which browsers can clear under pressure or via privacy settings. Open a walk from the Archive and tap export: the HTML file is self-contained, opens anywhere, and needs no app. Installing Aimless to the home screen gives storage the best protection. For the whole collection at once, Back up on the Archive screen writes walks, photos and saved filters to one JSON file; Restore brings them back, which is also how everything moves to a new phone.
Pause and ponder the lines you are given. Sometimes they turn out to have been waiting for you.
Then don't go. Waypoints are random points; they know nothing of fences, railways, water, or private land. Use common sense, respect private property, and when in doubt tap "Close as I can get": the walk accepts where you stood and moves on.
It doesn't pick a filter, it rolls one: a random stack of effects stored on that photo. Most rolls are ordinary, occasionally one is golden. Keep tapping until one clicks, then leave it alone: the next tap replaces it. A roll worth keeping: tap Save in the rail, name it, and it joins your filters like any other. It works on exactly one selected photo at a time.
Use Aimless in punk mode: start a walk but don't follow the arrow. Capture a series of 3, 5 or 7 photos on the way: when you get to a good spot tap "Close as I can get", take a photo, OK, Continue. It's fine to turn your screen off between photos, but the GPS trace is only recorded while the app is open.
KML is the route format mapping apps understand. On a walk's export sheet, "Export Route" downloads a .kml file: the plan path, your walked trace and each stop. It contains the walk's real GPS coordinates, so share the file knowingly.
Wobbletone is an image-effects playground: you build a stack of effects, each with its own settings, in the same format Aimless filters use. Make your filters there and send them to Aimless: each preset's Export button saves exactly the file the Filters sheet imports.
Tap the + at the end of the Filter rail on a walk's detail page, then paste the code from Wobbletone's Code tab or bring in a .json file: a preset's Export button saves one filter, Export All saves the whole set and imports them all at once. Importing again updates filters with the same name instead of adding copies. Get Wobbletone at wobbletone.com.
The same + opens the Filters sheet, where every filter shows a live preview on one of the walk's photos. Any filter can be hidden so the rail stays short. Your own filters, saved or imported, can also be exported as .json files to share, or deleted.
Yes. Open a walk from the Archive, tap export, then Neocities page. Aimless asks for your site name once, then builds the files for you: the page, a preview image, and an index page that lists your published walks. Upload them to a folder called aimless on your site, and the page is live with a proper preview when you share the link.
Anyone with the link can see the page, so publish the walks you want seen. Your Neocities password and API key are never asked for.
The preview only knows where your page lives because of the folder: keep the page and its image together in aimless, or the link preview loses its image.
The index.html is a ready-made front page for your walks. Upload it into the aimless folder beside the walk pages, then link to yoursite.neocities.org/aimless/ from your homepage. Keep it there: its links are relative, so moving it to your site root breaks them. A walk joins the list when you tick the index checkbox at build time, or later on the published step; Update index makes a fresh index.html to upload after you change your mind.
Want a page of your own design instead? Copy file list puts your published walks on the clipboard as plain text: paths, titles, dates, descriptions. Feed it to an LLM with a creative prompt, or build the page by hand. Aimless only knows about walks published from this device.
The absence is the design. Aimless is about being where you are, not navigating somewhere. You follow an arrow, not a route, and the shape of your walk is only revealed afterwards.
Aimless is only a link: aimless.earth. If someone you know should wander, send it to them.
